What we talk about

Here are the general questions and themes that we cover.

01

Opening

Everyone is building something, and someone taught them how. We start with what you’re making and who shaped how you lead.

  • Tell me a little about what you’re building or running right now.
  • Who taught you the most about leadership, and what did they show you?
02

Community

No one gets anywhere alone — every position is a series of deals with the people around you. Leading a community asks more than being present in it.

  • What does it mean to actually lead in your community, beyond being present in it?
  • What deals have you made to get where you are?
03

Business

Every deal happens under uncertainty — you know some things about yourself and your own capabilities, and you are always judging what the other side brings to the table.

  • What’s the hardest financial decision you’ve had to make as a leader?
  • Where do you feel like you’re flying a little blind in your own business right now?
04

Family

The deals we make at home are the ones we talk about least. Who you are at work, who you are at home, and what you want your people to understand about money.

  • What deals have you made with your family about who you are at work versus who you are at home?
  • What’s one thing about money you want the people in your family to understand that you didn’t understand at their age?
05

Finances

You are a producer serving customers, a consumer in the world, and a manager on top of it — money looks different from each seat.

  • What does “enough” look like for you, financially?
  • If your business is supposed to fund a life, what does that life actually look like?
06

Looking forward

Every deal is in service of one of three things — protecting against downside, finding balance, or creating and managing abundance.

  • What makes you feel secure about the future — and what makes you feel insecure?
  • What deals will you need to make next to get where you’re going?
07

Closing

The best lessons are usually the deals someone should have told us to make earlier. We finish there, and with anything you expected us to ask.

  • What’s a deal you wish someone had told you to make earlier?
  • Anything you expected me to ask that I didn’t?

The interview films

What we’ve learned

Every conversation teaches us something about how people lead and decide. The best of them become short films, published with each guest’s blessing.
